通勤の時であったと思う。JR西船橋駅にて武蔵野線から総武線に乗換えする。およそ、午前七時四十分かそこらの時間帯である。まだ、混雑するというほどではないが、ホームはあふれるばかりに通勤客でいっぱいになる。これは、秋葉原駅に向かう電車に乗り込む人々ばかりではなく、西船駅始発に乗り込み、座席を確保しようと行列を作る乗客がいるからだ。彼らは一本程度は遅れても良いから、しっかり座って行こうという客たちである。秋葉原あるいはそれ以上の距離を、電車で座っていけるかどうかは大きい。自分は、すぐ降りるので先を行く電車にすぐ乗り込む。そんな、人が多いホームから、乗り込んだ時の出来事である。「なんだね、この若いのは、・・」（幾ら急いでいるからと言って年寄りを押したりしちゃいけないよ）とでも言いたかったのだろう。中年太りのはなはだしい、小柄な婦人が、混み合う電車の中で大きな声を出していった。すると、不動産の営業マンかと見まがうほど、ビシっときめたスーツの、若者は、何か手荒なことをした。押し返したのか、暴言をはいたのか、覚えていない。うるさい。とどなったか？婦人は、ソプラノ歌手もどきの声を続けるでもなく、電車から、あたふたと出ていったのであった。おかあさんほどの年輩の婦人にそんな言葉をかけたりするではない、とでも、誰かが言っておかしくなかったのだが、そのご、電車はなにもなかったように出発したことであった。
